Top 10 Random Thoughts – Eagles Win the Super Bowl

Rather than live-tweet the Eagles Super Bowl win, we decided to go with a Random Thoughts piece. Who knew that the game would be THAT good? The Eagles’ win over the Patriots will go down in the history books as one of the greatest games ever played. In retrospect, live-tweeting would have probably been better, but instead, here are our Top 10 Random Thoughts:

10.     We expected a close one with New England putting on a game-sealing score late to win 31-17. Um, can we have one of those Trump “I Got Caught Sleeping With a Porn Star a Few Months After My Wife Gave Birth” evangelical mulligans that they hand out? Awesome, thanks!

9.     The Tide commercial was great. The Amazon commercial was great. But while people are talking about legacies and G.O.A.T.’s (more on that later), is it too soon to call the Eli Manning/Odell Beckham Jr. Dirty Dancing commercial the greatest Super Bowl ad of all time?

8.     Do people realize the guts it took to call that 4th down trick play? Can you imagine the flack that Eagles Coach Doug Pederson would be taking  had that failed? What a perfect call. It was pretty easy to diagnose the direct snap, but the toss and throw back to Foles? Insane.

7.     The 4th down play to Ertz was the right call but SOOOOOOO many coaches would have punted from their own 45 because of the fear of not making it and then subsequently getting blamed. Doug Pederson played to win, not to avoid losing. Other coaches should take note.

6.     Long story short, Nick Foles won the MVP, but, Doug Pederson . . .

5.     Speaking of Pederson, doesn’t it look like he’s wearing one of those visors with the fake hair that covers up a bald spot?

4.     Why are people acting like Justin Timberlake sleepwalked through the halftime show like Sam Perkins in the latter part of his career? It wasn’t the greatest halftime show ever but it wasn’t nearly as gawdawful as we’re reading about. Calm down people.

3.     We’re not Patriots haters, but there is definitely something sweet to seeing the Donald Trump team lose. Remember that Brady had the #MAGA hat long before anyone else and featured it in his locker after a game during press interviews. Belichick wrote Trump a puff piece letter and Robert Kraft had him on the sidelines. It’s nice to imagine Trump watching that game and being crushed by it.

2.     It’s not as crystal clear that Tom Brady is still the G.O.A.T (“Greatest of All-Time”). Yes, he threw for a million yards with no interceptions and 3 TD’s. Yes, he’s old. Yes, he’s won five Super Bowls. But can a QB really be the G.O.A.T. if he can’t get rid of the ball in the pocket under pressure? That sack/fumble wasn’t from the blind side. James White was open early in the play in the flat. Yes, it’s a nit to pick and the Patriots’ defense was atrocious, but Brady had the ball with a chance to win the game and blew it. Brady has lost the 3 Super Bowls with the same key ingredient: Pocket pressure. Are we sure that he’s better than Joe Montana? Point being that there’s an argument to be had now, whereas had he marched down the field and scored, we’d be saying that the argument is dead on arrival. Unfair? Since when are legacy arguments fair?

1.     Regardless of whether Brady is the G.O.A.T., the Patriots’ dynasty is coming to an end. Belichick is recommending assistants take other head coaching jobs and prepping them for said jobs, something Belichick has never done. Brady is in his forties. And there is clearly dissension in New England. Long story short, one of the greatest football runs ever might be over.

Bonus Afterthought: Well . . . either the dynasty’s over or Brady unleashes one of the all-time revenge seasons, wins the regular season and Super Bowl MVP’s next year, and cements himself as the G.O.A.T. No, we’re not deciding which one we think is more likely yet.

  1. Very good points. But, speaking as a Patriots fan, you missed one of the big stories: Why did Coach Bill bench Malcolm Butler? Rumors are swirling and no answer has yet emerged. But Butler could have helped prop up – or transform? – that woeful Patriot defense!
Also, not all the Patriots are in Trump’s camp. There are some sane ones too 🙂
